Der Reigen / The Merry-Go-Round
An extremely beautiful song about death
A glance ahead: A premiere is planned for November 18th 2020. Now that we write this, more than a year until then. What will be there on the stage? We can design and describe, but we cannot know for sure. Considering the future only one thing is for certain: he will come, our death. Too early, too late, suddenly, longed for, shocking or releasing.
A glace back: Trying to cope with this certainty without freezing in panic, the figure of the dancing death developed in the 14th century. A shaky skeleton, fiddling, playing timpani or picking the bass. Cheerfully and frivolously he is getting them all: beggars or kings, craftsmen, popes, cocottes or decent ladies, children and old people.
"Maestoso", "in soft tones", "excited, frivolous, swinging" are musical notations for the scenes in which we will meet the dancing, our personal death. Longing for death, the death too early, death as a leveler and drinking companion, death as a ridiculous hand puppet, who is put into his own coffin by Punch, all this we can visualize, show and lead to a cheerful parade of the dead. Because: who if not the puppeteers are the most dauntless in a face-to-face encounter with death. And finally we are all sitting on a slide directly into death's arms. Woo-hoo!!! - and off we go!
